A sports poster is the easiest win in a kid's room. It costs less than a lamp, it takes five minutes to put up, and it's the one thing on the wall they picked themselves. The trick is choosing one that still looks good in two years, when the room has moved on from cartoon characters and he's asking for something that feels older.
Start with the player, not the team
Kids attach to players before teams. Ask who he'd want on his wall and you'll get an answer in under a second. A Shohei Ohtani poster or a Justin Jefferson poster will get looked at every day; a generic team logo won't. If he's between players, a two- or three-poster set of the same sport reads as a collection instead of a random pile.
Pick a style that survives a redecorate
Busy photo posters with sponsor logos and action blur look great at eight and dated at twelve. Minimalist, illustrated posters with clean color blocks fit a room whether the bedding is dinosaurs or navy blue. They also work in a frame later, when the room goes from kid to teen. Size it to the wall, not the poster
- 11x14 above a desk, on a door, or grouped three across.
- 16x20 the default for a single poster over a dresser or nightstand.
- 18x24 the one to pick for over the bed; it holds its own on a big wall.
- 24x36 statement size for a bare wall or a shared room where it needs to be seen from the door.
If you're unsure, go one size bigger than feels safe. Small posters on a big wall look like an afterthought.
Frame it, or don't

One poster for a birthday, a second at Christmas, a third when the season starts. A wall that fills in over a couple of years feels like his, not like a decorating project.
